It’s called methyl iodide, and even some chemists won’t go near it. It’s such a powerful and reliable carcinogen that researchers use it to induce cancer in lab animals.
Water pollution is posing a threat to bird populations by causing males to mate with each other.
Scientists believe poisonous metal compounds entering the food chain can affect sexuality, causing a reduction in offspring.
They found that even relatively low levels of methylmercury in the diet of male white ibises caused the birds to pair up with each other, snubbing females.
As a result fewer females breed and fewer chicks are produced.
Methylmercury is a form of mercury – the metal which is liquid at room temperature and is better known as quicksilver. It has been seeping into groundwater from industry for years.
This is the first scientific study to show how the pollutant appears to alter sexual preference.
U.S. researcher Peter Frederick captured 160 young white ibises – a coastal wading bird – and gave them food laced with methylmercury.
The birds were split into four groups. One group ate food with 0.3 parts per million (ppm) methylmercury, which most U.S. states would regard as too high for human consumption.
A second group was fed 0.1 ppm, and the third 0.05 ppm, a low dose that wild birds would be exposed to frequently. The fourth group received food clear of the poison.
All three dosed groups had significantly more homosexual males than the control group.
Male-male pairs courted, built nests together and paired off for several weeks.
Higher doses increased the effect, with 55 per cent of males in the 0.3 ppm group affected.
Overall, male-male mating was blamed for 81 per cent of unproductive nests in the dosed groups.
‘We knew mercury could depress their testosterone levels,’ explained Dr Frederick.
‘But we didn’t expect this. In the worst-case scenario, the production of young would fall by 50 per cent.’ Other birds would probably be similarly affected, he said.
However, Dr Frederick, of the Florida University, and fellow researcher Nilmini Jayasena, of the Peradeniya University, Sri Lanka, admitted it was far from clear if methylmercury could be linked to similar effects in mammals.

There are non-subversive gays who don’t want to impose anything on others. My family and I stayed at one like this in a bed & breakfast in England 20 years ago. Great guy, and he sends us a Christmas card every Christmas.
I agree. They are discreetly gay and not “in your face” about it.
It is a defect but we all have one. I have to wear glasses or contacts, am a bit color-blind (like 10% of all white males of northern-european stock) and I needed some orthodonture work, teeth-straightening, as a kid.
In my last life, in NS Germany, Gays who were quiet about it and were useful citizens had no problems.
Gays can be rightwing conservatives, even war heroes, and love their straight parents and siblings. They are not anti-straight people at all.
Now, if they preyed on young straight men in NS Germany, then that was very different.
I have experienced myself in this life so-called “chicken hawks”, older queers, coming on to me. I guess I was attractive to them back then, as I was to some women. The shocking and infuriating thing was that they did not care that I was married, that I had two children, and that I had no interest in them whatsoever.
One of them I ran into even at the front door of the Munich Bürgerbräukeller, the “citizens beer hall,” where the 1923 putsch attempt happened. For me it was a sacred place, of course.
They tried to kill me here, too, in 1939. My inner voice said to leave early and curtail my speech. So I did, and this saved my life. But eight of our old fighters and heroes of 1923 and the strife-ridden Weimar years of struggle, where 1,000 stormtroopers died, did perish. 🙁 🙁

Anyway, I had driven quite a ways to visit this meaningful spot, and pay my respects. But they had locked the doors a few minutes earlier.
I said in German to this older chap: “I just drove an hour for nothing. Why did they close a beer hall at 3 pm?”
He replied:
“Not as bad as if you cannot find a lover.”
This from an old, skinny, unattractive guy with gray hair, and this gave me the willies, because it was pure lust speaking. He wanted to f–k someone, like an animal. How low and degrading.
This was really stepping over the line for me. This was an insult. ….’Fellow, go and meet other gays in a gay bar or club somewhere. Fine. But do not bother straight men who find this repulsive!’
For any straight man, the touch in this way or a come-on by another man is like radioactive and makes the hair stand up on the back of your neck. It seems profoundly unnatural.
The gay guy who got beaten to death out west, Matthew Shepard, allegedly came on in a bar to two straight guys driving a pickup truck, hetero men who highly resented it. He looked very effeminate in every photo on Google images. If he did come on to these guys, it was very foolish. They would have taken it as a total insult.
“Don’t ask and don’t tell” was a very good slogan.
I will not release the names of two important WN authors who are or were gay, or of one who was and is bi (having been married, and he also had a daughter.)
They have all done very fine work, risked a lot, losing careers for standing up to jewry…. and they are heroes to me.
The gay thing is between them now and God. He judges every man and woman by their deeds.
In fact, there is nothing weird about being attracted to men. Half the human race is attracted to men. They are usually called women. 😉

Require them to keep their aberration behind closed doors and forbid them to proselytize. Allow generalized derogation by the public, i.e.: Make them into dirty jokes.
In school sex education, explain what the homo-erotic actually do in order to obtain orgasm from the body of another male, in medical terminology in a room-temperature voice. Encourage natural repugnance when it arises.
