We have all heard the stories that there is no more gold in Ft. Knox, just gold-plated tungsten. (Tungsten is very similar to gold in weight, but far cheaper.) Now this:

It is one thing for tungsten-filled gold bars to appear in the UK, or in Germany. After all, out of sight, and across the Atlantic, certainly must mean out of mind, and out of the safe.
However, when a 10 ounce 999.9 gold bar bearing the stamp of the reputable Swiss Produits Artistiques Métaux Précieux (PAMP, with owner MTP) and a serial number (serial #038892, likely rehypothecated in at least 10 gold ETFs across the world but that’s a different story), mysteriously emerges in the heart of the world’s jewelry district located on 47th Street in Manhattan, things get real quick. Moments ago, Myfoxny reported that a 10-ounce gold bar costing nearly $18,000 turned out to be a counterfeit. The discovery was made by the dealer Ibrahim Fadl, who bought the PAMP bar in question from a merchant who has sold him real gold before. “But he heard counterfeit gold bars were going around, so he drilled into several of his gold bars worth $100,000 and saw gray tungsten — not gold. The bar was filled with tungsten, which weighs nearly the same as gold but costs just over a dollar an ounce.”
What makes so devious is a real gold bar is purchased with the serial numbers and papers, then it is hollowed out, the gold is sold, the tungsten is put in, then the bar is closed up. That is a sophisticated operation.
MTB, the Swiss manufacturer of the gold bars, said customers should only buy from a reputable merchant. The problem, he admits, is Ibrahim Fadl is a very reputable merchant.
Raymond Nessim, CEO Manfra, Tordell & Brookes, said he has reported the situation to the FBI and Secret Service.
The Secret Service, which deals with counterfeits, said it is investigating.
And cue panic on the realization that virtually any gold bar in the world, not just those in Europe and Australia, which have already had close encounters with Tungsten substitutes, but also New York may be hollowed out and have a real worth of a few dollars max. Which, sadly, is fitting considering our main story from last night was the realization that an unknown amount of Chinese iron ore had either never existed or had simply vaporized, and was no longer serving as the secured collateral to various liabilities circulating in the electronic ether. After all, only the most naive out there could conceive of gold being sacrosanct when every other asset class is being diluted to infinity by a regime that has long since run out of money.
As for gold-based transactions on West 47th street: look for that market to grind to a halt at least for as long as it takes for this scandal to be forgotten too.
The only open question remaining will be how much of the gold located 90 feet below Libert 33 is in the same Tungstenized format. For what it’s worth: it is unlikely we will ever find out.

The parents of Corrie fought back tears as a judge fully absolved the Israeli army for the death of their daughter as she tried to prevent the destruction of a Palestinian house in Gaza in 2003.
Rejecting the Corrie family’s civil suit against the state, Oded Gershon accepted the army’s argument that the driver of the bulldozer had not seen the 23-year-old activist. He proceeded to criticise Corrie for putting herself in harm’s way.
“She chose to put herself in danger,” Mr Gershon told the district court in Haifa. “She stood in front of a giant bulldozer in a place where the operator could not see her. She could have easily distanced herself from danger like any reasonable person would.
“Her death is the result of an accident she brought upon herself.”

Visibly distraught by the ruling, which comes seven years after they first filed their suit, Corrie’s parents promised to appeal in an effort to keep alive their long campaign to hold Israel to account.
“We are, of course, deeply saddened and deeply troubled by what we heard today,” her mother Cindy said. “I believe this was a bad day – not only for our family but for human rights, the rule of law, and also for the country of Israel.”
The death of Corrie badly damaged Israel’s international reputation and strained relations with the US, its superpower patron.
Dan Shapiro, the US ambassador to Israel, told the Corrie family last week that Washington remained dissatisfied with the way Israel had handled the incident. He has previously said that Israel’s investigation of her death had been neither credible nor transparent.
But the court ruled that a military police investigation in the weeks after Corrie’s death, which found that she had been killed as a result of her own irresponsible behaviour, had been properly conducted.

Fellow activists from International Solidarity Movement, the group for which Corrie campaigned, have long rejected the official Israeli explanation.
Tom Dale, a British former activist who was just 30 feet away when Corrie was crushed, said that it was impossible for the driver of the bulldozer not to have seen her, pointing out that she wore a fluorescent vest and was standing on raised ground.
“Whatever one thinks about the visibility from a D9 bulldozer, it is inconceivable that at some point the driver did not see her, given the distance from which he approached, while she stood, unmoving, in front of it,” he said in a statement.
“As I told the court, just before she was crushed, Rachel briefly stood on top of the rolling mound of earth which had gathered in from of the bulldozer:
her head was above the level of the blade and just a few metres from the driver.”
The Corrie family’s lawyer accused the court of allowing impunity to prevail over accountability.
“Rachel Corrie was killed while non-violently protesting home demolitions and injustice in Gaza and today this court has given its stamp of approval to flawed and illegal practices that failed to protect civilian life,” Hussein Abu Hussein said.
“This verdict speaks to the systematic failure to hold the Israeli military accountable for continuing violations of basic human rights.”

Israeli vets confess to ‘no mercy’ abuse of Palestinian ‘terrorist’ kids

Israeli veterans have spoken out, describing a degrading culture of abuse and harassment of Palestinian children in the West Bank and Gaza. A report containing 30 veterans’ testimonies details numerous cases of violence committed by Israeli soldiers.
The report was released to world media on Saturday by Breaking the Silence, an organization made up of Israeli army veterans formed in 2004. They compiled more than 850 accounts from current and former Israeli soldiers describing abuses they committed or witnessed.
The investigation seeks to serve as “a witness to the ongoing decline of the military system into increasing immorality.”
“The words of the soldiers included here constitute an urgent call to Israeli society and its leaders: We must foster a serious discourse regarding the price of military rule of the Occupied Territories,” said the report.
A number of reports pertain to the detention and abuse of minors who pelt Israeli soldiers with stones and the imposition of Israeli control in occupied areas.
A first sergeant in an armored corps unit described his job as “population control,” in a testimony entitled “What is that job, really?” His unit would enter Palestinian villages on a daily basis to “make their presence felt” and to show the local residents that the area did not belong to them.
“A patrol goes in, or two patrols, two Hummers secured by a jeep, and raise hell inside the villages. A whole company may be sent in on foot in two lines like a military parade in the streets, provoking riots, provoking children,” said the first sergeant.
He said that his commander’s aim was to “grind the population down” so that they would not even think of throwing stones at their occupiers.
‘Whoever is slow to run gets beaten up’
One testimony describes in detail a camouflaged ambush on Palestinian children in Qalandiya in the West Bank following a riot. The platoon corned the children and beat them with wooden clubs as they tried to escape.
“People were made to fall to the ground, and then the soldiers with the clubs would go over to them and beat them. A slow runner was beaten — that was the rule,” said a first sergeant in the Engineering Corps.
According to the sergeant such ambushes were carried out about four or five times sometimes on the same children. The aim of the exercise, the sergeant said, was to discourage the children from throwing stones at the Israeli soldiers, but he did not believe it had any effect.
‘Not considered kids’
The report documents numerous cases of children under the age of 16 being taken into custody, blindfolded and deprived of food and water.
A first sergeant from a Paratroopers Brigade who regularly took children of 12-14 years of age into custody for attempting to cross the border into Israel said they were taught to treat the children not as small children, but as assisting terrorists.
“The intelligence officer saw two soldiers beating one of the detainees. I think they were about 16 years old, if I remember correctly,” he said.
‘We’d lost all sense of mercy’
Another veteran described how his troop would trash shops and buildings because they were bored, purposely triggering riots.
He related an incident where Israeli soldiers waiting for civilians outside a mosque began to fire rubber rounds in order to spark a riot. He said that if Arab children threw stones at them they would use them as human shields.
“You know how badly beaten they get? You catch him, push the gun against his body, he can’t make a move, he’s totally petrified. He only goes: “No, no, army.” You can tell he’s petrified.”
Report slanders IDF
In response to the report the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that Breaking the Silence had revealed its true intentions “to generate negative publicity regarding the IDF and its soldiers, rather than facilitating a proper investigation.”
“As a matter of policy, the organization chooses not to provide the IDF and other relevant bodies with the critical material necessary for investigation. By compiling testimonies over long periods of time and refusing to provide additional detail, [Breaking the Silence] proves its true intentions – rather than facilitating proper investigation, the organization seeks to generate negative publicity regarding the IDF and its soldiers.” the IDF told The Weekend Australian.
Breaking Silence member Yehuda Shaul hit back at the IDF, saying “over 70 of our testifiers have come out publicly with their names and identities revealed, and I’m one of them.“
“If the IDF was interested in investigating our claims, we probably would have already been summoned to interrogations,” concluded Shaul.

Rachel Corrie’s parents were “distraught”? Is it really possible that people can be THIS gullible? Did they REALLY expect fairness from Talmud-studying Jews? And to think that people like me are demonized — and especially by people like THAT — as being “hate-filled” and “prejudiced”!
Rachel’s parents are the kind that voted for the Obamanation; they are convinced there are “also many good Jews” — and after all, it was not American Jews but “Israelis” who did it.
This whole pitiful saga reminds me of the California couple whose beautiful blonde daughter was murdered by sub-human blax in South Africa where she had gone “to help them.” HER parents travelled to this sewer and ADOPTED one of the murderers of THEIR DAUGHTER in the spirit of forgiveness.
Hey, Mr. & Mrs. Corrie, why not do the same and adopt the bulldozer driver?
