Dear Readers around the Globe,
A very eventful year 2014 is coming to an end and as one of my donors/subscribers this year I would like to give you an update and express my gratitude for your contribution. As you know the Rebel Website has gone through a number of changes this year, the most important being
- the upgrade to a top-of-the-range dedicated enterprise server
- the extension with a Youtube-like video sharing and broadcasting feature
- the upgrade to the latest Joomla content management system version
- the upgrade to a new, far more versatile magazine template
None of these improvements would have been possible without your financial support and that of other contributors. Over the entire year 2014, I received 275 donations, totalling US$14,442. The single biggest donation was $1,030, the smalles $4. The average donation was $52, the median $30.
Above numbers are a big improvement compared to previous years and I am grateful to you and everybody else who contributed. It allowed me to double my 2013 budget of $500/month to now $1250/month.
The bulk of those $1250 is for the monthly web hosting fee of $719 for my dedicated enterprise server, including the recently performed RAM upgrade from 16MB to 64MB. The remainder is for other hosting related expenses such as
- domain name registrations
- malware protection
- professonal services performed by hosting firm
and software subscription fees for extensions such as our
- community software
- videosharing/broadcasting software
- forum software
- blogging software
- fundraising software
- shopping cart software
- like/unlike software
- RSS software
- social media submission software
- document manager software
- admin tools
- ACL management software
- AJAX live search software
- Mailing software
- file manager software
- live chat software
- backup software
As you can see, there is much more to the running of a site such as the Rebel Website than subscribing to some blogging provider such as wordpress or blogspot, especially if you have between 10,000 and 20,000 unique readers per day, 150,000 to 200,000 per month, visiting 150,000 pages per day.
All in all, the improvements made over the past 12 months have resulted in a doubling of visitor numbers and considerable improvements in the pages/visit numbers, time spent/visit and bounce rates, especially after the recent upgrade.
So thanks again for your support, and your part in making the Rebel Website the outstanding dissident site it is today.
On behalf of the entire Rebel Community, I wish you a very successful and happy new year 2015.
Sincerely,
Your Rebel of Oz
