…..Yin and yang

Anyone who knows anything of history knows that great social changes are impossible without feminine upheaval. Social progress can be measured exactly by the social position of the fair sex, the ugly ones included.

What I wrote while in France:

Le Tao, qui est la doctrine des deux forces, n’est pas à  comprendre qu’avec les deux forces, mais avec autant d’intuition que d’intellect. Il est logique mais plus que cela. C’est une vue inclusive des choses.

I commissioned a French artist in Aix-en-Provence to paint this.

Tout mouvement politique contient les deux éléments. Par exemple, le marxisme prêchait la disparition de l’État (yin) après la dictature (yang) du prolétariat (yin), et un parti communiste sans « culte de l’individu » (yang) et dirigé par des comités (yin). Le stalinisme et le Khmer Rouge étaient la dictature pure (yangissime), parlant des buts yin mais ne les visants guère.

Les conservateurs aiment le passé (yin) et sont averses aux révolutions (qui de leur part sont yang). Mais un conservateur de droite veut conserver son pouvoir (yang) et ses privilèges (yang) et ne pas aider les pauvres ou défavorisés (yin) qui sont juste paresseux (yin) — alors il rejette tout ce qui est yin. Un conservateur modéré est ouvert aux innovations (yang) qui garde ce qui était bon dans le passé (yin).

Translation:

The Tao, which is the doctrine of the two forces, is not to be understood except by these two forces, and as much by intuition (yin) as by intellect (yang). It makes sense but more than that. It’s an inclusive view of things.

Every political movement contains both elements. For example, Marxism preached the disappearance of the state (yin) after the dictatorship (yang) of the proletariat (yin), and a communist party without any “cult of the individual” (which is of course yang) and led by committees (yin). Stalinism and the Khmer Rouge were pure dictatorships (ultra-yang), speaking of yin goals (peace and equality) but not really aiming at them at all. They were ultra-harsh.

Conservatives love the past (yin) and are averse to revolutions (which, for their part, are yang).

But a right-wing conservative wants to keep his power (yang) and his privileges (yang) and not help the poor or the underprivileged (no yin compassion), viewing them as just lazy (yin-passive) – so he rejects everything that seems yin. A moderate conservative is open to innovations (yang) that keep all (and only) what was good from the past (yin).
