In a memorandum issued Tuesday, President Barack Obama directed US
agencies working abroad, including the State Department and the US Agency
for International Development, to use foreign aid to assist gays and lesbians
who are facing human rights violations. And he ordered US agencies to protect
vulnerable gay and lesbian refugees and asylum seekers.
“The struggle to end discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender persons is a global challenge, and one that is central to the United
States’ commitment to promoting human rights,” Obama said in a statement.

The Welsh government has accused the National Library of Wales of putting its
reputation “at risk” after accepting a 300,000 pound donation from a known Nazi
collaborator. Louis Feutren was a leading member of Breton groups who worked
with the Nazis after their invasion of France during the Second World War. After
he died in 2010, he bequeathed a collection of papers and tapes to the National
Library of Wales in Aberystwyth, along with a financial donation worth 300,000
pounds ($475,000).

A large part of Berlin’s Nazi past went up in a cloud smoke on Saturday when
a prestige Third Reich sports-and-rally hall built on the orders of Adolf Hitler was
destroyed. The Deutschlandhalle, erected in the capital in 1935 one year before
the Olympic Games, was the largest sports area in the world at the time.
Later it became the scene of huge party rallies.
… Built in just nine months, the Deutschlandhalle was a prestige project for
the regime and was opened by Hitler on November 29, 1935. It was used during
the 1936 Olympic Games for boxing, wrestling and weightlifting events.
The building, designed by Franz Ohrtmann and Fritz Wiemer, was 117 meters
long and 83 meters wide, and had a capacity for crowds of up to 16,000
spectators.
During an exhibition on colonialism in 1938 Hitler’s favorite pilot Hanna Reitsch
flew a helicopter inside the hall.
Much of the building was damaged during an Allied aerial attack in 1943 but it
was restored after the war and opened its doors again in 1957.
