UK shuns old WWI comrades in arms

Claims are being made that South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are being marginalised in Britain’s centenary commemorations of the start of WWI. The three countries, then part of the British Empire, played significant roles in the war.
The Daily Telegraph reported this week that British cabinet ministers had been accused of “political correctness” and “whitewashing history” .
They were also accused of playing down the roles of these three countries in favour of that of new Commonwealth nations.
Colonel Richard Kemp, a former British army officer and now a military commentator, said:

“This seems to be an attempt by the government to use the centenary as a means of trying to appease large number of immigrants. “But it should not be an exercise in political correctness or social engineering. Countries such as India and those in West Africa did make a significant contribution, and we should certainly remember that. But we should not do so in the place of Australia and New Zealand…along with Canada and South Africa.”

The South African government was uncertain of its role in the commemoration, but Major-General Roy Andersen, Chairman of the Delville Wood Trust said that South Africa would take part in four later events.
The row was sparked by Whitehall officials telling Australian journalists in a briefing that no events were planned to mark the contribution of their country, and that internal discussions on plans had not mentioned Australia, NZ or SA.
It was disclosed at the briefing that officials were concentrating on promoting the roles played by Commonwealth countries that became indenpendant after 1945. Singled out for promotion were India, Bangladesh and West African countries like Nigeria. It was reported that this was to promote “community cohesion in the UK.

CANNON FODDER: 12,000 South African and Rhodesian troops died in WWI. The most costly action that the South African forces on the Western Front fought in was the Battle of Delville Wood in 1916. Only some 750 of the 3153 officers and men that entered the wood mustered when the Brigade was finally relieved on 20 July. The casualties included every officer of 2nd and 3rd Regiments and of the Machine Gun Company attached to the brigade.

The Canadian cannon fodder in Afghanistan will be remembered the same way by the AA Empire. And of course the ANZACs (Australia and New Zealand) at Gallipolli did not exist at all.
