I got a nice email from a former Marine Corps officer today, saying:

You may have heard this before, in one form or another, but I think it rings true: “There are two types of leaders — those that demand respect, and those that command respect (via their behavior, words and actions).” I heard this first from a Marine during some small-talk at a bachelor-officers-quarters bar in the Philippines in about 1987. I never forgot it.

Thanks for commanding respect, and blogging daily with insight and information on important topics.

Enlisted Marines (privates, corporals and sergeants) have a three-month bootcamp (at Parris Island, South Carolina or San Diego, California) — and officers a six-month camp — where among other things they learn instantaneous obedience to authority. That is why they are entrusted with guarding the White House, and Navy bases, and protect the captain on a Navy ship from mutiny, and fly the presidential helicopter, “Marine One.”

Notice these young Marine Corps officers swearing their oath to obey first and foremost THE CONSTITUTION! NOT “the President”!! The CONSTITUTION! And , no surprise here, they are overwhelmingly white and of excellent racial heritage.
