A southern Australian wrote me:

Their practice is to smash a wooden or iron bar down on a dog’s muzzle in order to terrify it the moment before death (to release adrenalin); this supposedly makes the meat tenderer.

 

And thanks to one-way “free trade,” making China rich and us poor, the Chinese are taking US over too!

    “Epitaph to a Dog” (also sometimes referred to as ‘Inscription on the Monument to a Newfoundland Dog’) is a poem by the British poet Lord Byron.
    It was written in 1808 in honour of his Newfoundland dog, Boatswain, who had just died of rabies. When Boatswain contracted the disease, Byron reportedly nursed him without any fear of becoming bitten and infected.[1] The poem is inscribed on Boatswain’s tomb, which is larger than Byron’s, at Newstead Abbey, Byron’s estate.[2]
    Ted with owner and dad Lee Barnett. The massive 12-stone pooch that survived a 150 foot fall off a cliff in Morwenstow, Cornwall, landing on a ledge just above jagged rocks. The two-year-old Newfoundland puppy, described by Falmouth Coastguard as being like a small pony, was rescued by a team of 14 search and rescue volunteers using cradles and pullies. Ted was on holiday with his family Gemma (mum) Lee Barnett (dad) , son Zak (12), daughter Xanthe (7), son Tate (5) from Coventry when he decided to leap off the cliff.     The opening lines, long thought to have been written by Byron, were found to have been written by his friend John Hobhouse. Byron had originally planned to use just the last two lines as the inscription.[3]

    Degraded mass of animated dust!
    Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
    Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit!

    Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
    Ye, who behold perchance this simple urn,
    Pass on “ it honours none you wish to mourn.
    To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise;
