A COMMENT.

I just realised I am biased. I thought i was being snobbishly impartial but I’m not. I’m biased and I want Russia to win.

I was sitting here trying to figure out what the hell this latest rescue attempt, by sea, from Mariupol was all about. It was futile, doomed to fail, with zero chance of success, so why attempt such a foolhardy rescue that was never going to succeed?

And that got me thinking.

There has been a lot of attention around Mariupol, trapped western field marshals directing the order of battle from a command post cut off and surrounded —  you know, the kind of Hollywood script. There’s also reports of it being many European mercenaries heard crying to their moms in comms chatter, and also rumours of not ‘someone’ but ‘something’. There’s been many attempts at rescue or ‘extraction’ depending on who or what you like to believe is there.

Obviously the future will reveal that it was Bruce Willis being kept as a prisoner by Ukraine forces who fell in love with Dimitry his Ukrainian trans guard that helps hatch a plan of escape from their captors and through the evil Russian forces surrounding the city, which they manage to do with an armful of new born babies wrapped in the star spangled banner, fashioned from Bruce’s under ware. The final scene of this haggard group of desperate evacuees stumbling over the brow of a dry grassy hill to safety, in the peak of summer heat, to emotionally uplifting music was going to be the blockbuster of summer 2023 but then poor Bruce got sick. Honestly , a true tragedy, i love that guy.

The point is, irrespective of what you think is going to happen or even what you think is happening we will probably never know what is or did happen. Nothing has been said from the west, no denials, no admissions, not even an acknowledgement. Why is that. That’s when it occurred to me that this could be all Russian propaganda. Maybe there is nobody in Mariupol, no trapped mercs, no senior commander, no suitcase of secrets.

We give the story credence because there are no denials. Russia say it’s so and the West say nothing, which incriminates themselves. If the West issue a statement, it gives the story credence; it pays into the Russian propaganda machine, so they just stay quiet.

And also because the West really don’t have the intelligence on the ground to confidently deny the claims, especially after such cheap and nasty rallying calls by senior political figures from the West. They can’t truly know the extent to which their irresponsible rhetoric has damaged their own cause. In other words, they can’t deny with any confidence the claims of Western mercenaries in Mariupol because there could easily be many present because of their callous attitudes and they can’t be sure there aren’t any because they just don’t have the intel.

So Russia are using this story, a maybe made-up story, the magical mystery of Mariupol, for their own propaganda machine. They can say what they want; they can even show Western POWs, and claim they were from Mariupol, and who would be able to deny it? Western politicians have handed them this treasure and they can do as they please with it.

So why am I biased and not snobbishly impartial as I thought, and why have I realised I want Russia to win? Because I didn’t want to post this, it felt like betrayal, it felt like giving the game away and its Russia’s game. It may not be an accurate appraisal of the situation in Mariupol; it may be completely wrong; there maybe Western mercs trapped there; they may have a saucerful of secrets in Mariupol.

But it could also be Russian propaganda and when that thought occurred to me I realised i didn’t WANT it to be propaganda, and I didn’t want to tell anyone else it could be.

Because I really do believe Russia are on the side of right in this.
