First the anecdotal….

While recently watching the Super Bowl (American football event) I almost had to close my eyes and plug my ears during the commercial breaks as advertisement after advertisement was wall-to-wall BLACK.
.
There were Blacks selling home insurance [Mr Macho Hunk, a baritone-voiced Allstate salesman], cars, lifestyle, clothing, soft drinks and much more….all to mindlessly subservient and oblivious white consumers.
.
One commercial in particular troubled me more than any other I watched on the day.
.
It was an advertisement for some sort of middle-of-the-road Sport Utility Vehicle – I don’t recall the brand of automobile as I wasn’t really paying attention at this juncture – that I presume costs somewhere in the range of $30-40,000 – that mostly drew my ire.
.
I’ll set the scene….
.
A gleaming SUV is meandering down a beautiful scenic mountain road.
.
Based on my knowledge of the United States and its geography (I spent a good decade studying in the States), I presume the road in question is located somewhere in the central Rocky Mountains of Northern Colorado, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho.
I say this due to the fact the backdrop was green and verdant – as opposed to arid and stony as it would have been if it were set in the Southern Rockies of southern Colorado and Arizona – and there was a noticeable tree-line above which there was little vegetation – which also excludes the eastern Appalachian and Adirondack mountain ranges.

The scene was definitely the sort of place wealthy liberals go to play during the winter, and people like us can only dream about living in.
.
The vehicle itself – more equipped for soccer moms zipping kids around suburban Connecticut or Southern California than Colorado and Wyoming, was nicely kitted out with tinted windows, lots of chunky, shiny bits and a roof rack for trendy mountain bikes and skis.
.
It was precisely the sort of vehicle a forty-something middle class white family, and a white guy with some distinguished gray around his temples, might want access to for the morning school run, a weekend jaunt to the ski slopes or a trip to grandma’s.
.
The commercial’s narrator talked about the glory of the mountains, how exquisitely the car handled on both on and off-road terrain, and expressed how owning it would give its new owner (you) access to the best America has to offer.
.
The car drove for a few hundred yards, while the female narrator continued to sell the vehicle before pulling into a lay-by and coming to a stop in front of a pristine mountain lake.
.
It was at this point that the driver’s side rear door opened and the narrator stopped speaking.
.
The camera then panned from the lake to the vehicle, zooming in on the driver’s side rear door, from which three stylish twenty-something BLACK women climbed out.
.
They were hip, obviously had a bit of white in them (liberal whites still aren’t conditioned enough into accepting Sudanese-looking blacks with bits of bushmeat jerky hanging from their mouths driving around in their green sport utility vehicles yet), and dressed as if they were headed to a college class, rather than for a muddy hike around a mountain lake.

The driver then climbed out….

She too was black, and I….was left shaking my head and feeling perplexed on SO many levels.

Firstly, young black women don’t buy this sort of vehicle. They simply can not afford it, on the levels needed for this advertisement to make sense from a business standpoint.
.
Besides it being too expensive, it guzzles gas compared to most modern cars and isn’t adept in city traffic where most young black women live! (Shoot….how many of even us Whites can even afford it?)
.
Secondly, the sort of people depicted in this specific commercial – that was superficially more about lifestyle, optics and aesthetics than the car itself – have little to no interest in visiting mountain lakes often which, in the case of the lakes in the Rockies, are hundreds, even thousands of miles from the cities in which they live.
.
And again I’m referring to the levels needed to make this commercial make sense from a business standpoint.
.
Sure there are Blacks that like the outdoors, but they are few and far between, and when they do have a penchant for fresh air, they typically prefer fishing, BBQing and engaging in the sort of activities rural blacks (as well as whites) enjoy – not birdwatching or skiing in Vail, and certainly not admiring mountain vistas!
.
This car, being marketed to the segment of the Super Bowl audience that drives this sort of vehicle, was being sold with an advertisement full of people who not only don’t buy these sorts of vehicles or like the lifestyle depicted, nature or lakes, but don’t even watch the damn Super Bowl!
.
So now, not only are they thrusting unrealistic imagery down our throats, for the sake of diversity, they are producing advertising that doesn’t make ANY sense from a common sense or a business position.
.
And yeah, all of this was racing through my head while I watched this wretched commercial (all so I could watch Tom Brady beat his anti-American and anti-white critics AGAIN 😉 ).
.
It was at this point that I decided to start keeping track of how many Super Bowl ads had Blacks in them – black women in particular.
.
Over the next few hours I watched about 20 commercials. There were black actors in 17 of them, whites in 18. Some of the ads shockingly featured an all-black cast!!
.
I also noted that I saw VERY few East Asian or Hispanic faces in any of the commercials, in spite of the fact that Hispanics make up a larger percentage of the population than Blacks – and East Asians, as a percentage of the total US population, have and spend LOADS more money than BOTH.

During the Super Bowl the actors in the commercials were either black or white, but predominantly black.
.
Although we are in the midst of a demographic catastrophe, and Whites are losing ground to Non-Whites in the United States more than in any other nation, whites still make up about 40-50% of the American population, and in the commercials I saw on the day, I recall they were represented by about that number.
.
When one takes into consideration that Whites buy at least 70% of the nation’s goods, that number though, is WAY too low,
.
Blacks, on the other hand, who only make up about 12% of the American population, and contribute (buy) FAR less to the economy than they should as a percentage of the population – because of their disproportionally high poverty rates and low incomes – were VASTLY overrepresented.

East Asians, who are the nation’s wealthiest demographic were NOWHERE to be seen.
.
This is also the case on television programming, where the people that control us (who are ALSO overrepresented in Hollywood, both behind the screens and on them), have over the past four decades weaponized society’s most dangerous and least valuable people – Blacks and Hispanics – against the rest of us.

And this is not just the case in the United States.
.
A recent study coming out of England that our Carl Mason sent me, conducted by a pro-diversity charity no less, claims that “BAME (black and ethnic minorities) and Gays are significantly over-represented on British television”.
.
“Fran, we are in a really precarious situation in Britain, where not only are Blacks all over our screens – as well as our streets – they are now in our historical dramas!!
In fact, “BAME people”, as they are referred to in Britain, “account for about 13 per cent of the national workforce but secure 23 per cent of on-screen roles”, the statistics show. [Compare that to the near 60% demographic share they hold in the United States to get some perspective on how bad things are in America.] And now they are playing our kings, queens and historical figures on screen!”
Couldn’t they at least find a pretty Russian or Iranian woman? Or some Caucasian, Bollywood-looking starlet, if they HAD to go for non-Anglos? Why fill the role with people as ugly as this lot!!!
And Carl is not being hyperbolic, I can assure you.

Although Britain, like the United States, is sadly one massive degenerate pigpen full of weirdos, sexual deviants and kiddy-fiddlers – the BBC’s estimate that a whopping 6.4 per cent of Britons are Gay, bisexual or one form of queer or another – still rings hollow in my opinion.

With that said, with 12% of the nation’s television characters representing people engaging in filthy deviant lifestyles, that’s STILL 6X my sicko population estimate and twice the BBC’s.

The figures and study were released after the Chairman of BBC drama defended his network’s practice of “crowbarring diverse characters and plotlines into adaptations of classic novels” (English kings and queens being now black on British tele), in what he claims is a concerted effort to “reflect the demographics of modern Britain”.

The latest British study also indicates that broadcasters and producers are “promoting actors and presenters of diverse backgrounds to on-screen roles, while failing to fully address off-screen diversity problems, especially at senior levels.”

Submissions to the diversity report were apparently voluntary but the study’s authors believe that the survey “does offer an accurate picture of where British television is”.

And just like in the States, it’s not all roses for “many minorities” either – something I stated earlier.

Good luck finding Eastern Europeans (who now make-up between 2 and 4% of Britain’s population), Western Europeans (there are hundreds of thousands of French and Italian people living in Britain), South East Asians, older people of any race or the disabled.

Good luck finding a white person on British TV with a foreign accent, despite the fact there are MILLIONS of white economic migrants and EU nationals living in Britain.

These groups – people still without a voice – are by far the most underrepresented minority groups on British television.

The study also reported that “over-50s account for less than 20 per cent of on-screen contributions, while making up well over 30 per cent of the workforce”.

Disabled people received “7.8 per cent of on-screen jobs and 5.2 per cent of off-screen, despite being 17 per cent of the population.”

Yeah, Britain has a few issues we won’t get into here.

Deborah Williams, executive director of the Creative Diversity Network – who quite remarkably pointed out a few of these hard truths the mainstream Establishment has been deliberately ignoring – said that “it was disappointing that disability representation had ‘flatlined’ in recent years”.

What she failed to mention though is that fact that it’s because ALL the roles on the tele now go to BLACKS and GAYS!!!
.
And therefore, there’s nothing left for anyone else!!

Comically, and as expected, Williams – who ADMITTED that blacks were over-represented – defended anti-white racism and blatant ageism on television by claiming “that BAME (non-white Brits) presenters and actors were over-represented because improving on-screen diversity had traditionally been seen as a quick win”.

She continued, saying,
“So much time is spent on quick wins, that digging deeper hasn’t necessarily been a priority. The easiest thing to do, and everyone is guilty of this whether in television or other industries, is to find a black person and put them on.”

I couldn’t agree more with the latter half of her statement. There are TOO damn many black faces on the television and in advertising, and it’s sickening.

Women are also slightly over-represented in both on-screen (52.4 per cent) and off-screen (53.7 per cent) roles. And like in America, they take down the bad guys, karate-chop their way through larger, more powerful men, beat up their boyfriends and husbands, and rule the roost. Same shit, different continent.

At this juncture, though, none of this should surprise anyone. It is not as if it were a new phenomenon.

Sir Ludovic said he was “all in favour of black advancement”, but claimed ethnic minorities were over-represented on TV and this was an “imbalance” that should be “readjusted”.

He continued,
“I’d like to take issue with the BBC execs who say it is their aim to bring more Blacks to the screen, as it seems they’ve already more than succeeded….I am all in favour of black advancement, but there’s now hardly a TV pub, police station, soap, vox pop or ad without rather more than its fair share of black participation.”

Historical accuracy shouldn’t have to matter in a fantasy.
One of the hallmarks of a Shonda Rhimes production is a sprawling multiracial ensemble cast. As a viewer, I’ve watched sexy lawyers, Seattle doctors, and how to get away with murder-ers (it’s a thing) of all ethnicities command the screen. The fact that many of them were not white was just an added plus while bingeing Shondaland’s addicting creations over the years.
Rhimes’ new Netflix hit, Bridgerton, is no different. Only this time, she’s executive-produced a Regency Era period drama based on a series of bestselling romance novels, and the cast represents the richest of the rich in 1813 London. You know, the very colonizers that were thriving as a direct result of their historic abuse and mistreatment of BIPOCs? Bridgerton raises the question of how diverse nobility could exist during a time when most Black and brown people in Britain were relegated to domestic work. For the record, according to romance novelist and historian Vanessa Riley, there were Black nobility. (Even a Black duke). But both the scale and level of acceptance of those people shown in Bridgerton is largely historically inaccurate—but purposefully so.
The “how” of it all is only addressed in Episode 4, “An Affair of Honor”, when Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh) waxes poetic about the power of love to a disgruntled Simon (Regé-Jean Page), as he’s in the midst of a falling out with his paramour. She says.
“Look at our queen. Look at our king. Look at their marriage. Look at everything it is doing for us, allowing us to become. We were two separate societies divided by color, until a king fell in love with one of us. Love, Your Grace, conquers all.”
To translate, Bridgerton exists in a fictional 19th-century London society where, unlike today, Queen Charlotte’s race was never up for debate. In the show, she is a black woman who ascended the throne, resulting in a more accepting world filled with equal opportunity where it wasn’t radical to see Black elite and middle class people: a duke, footman, lady’s maid, or even a respected boxer. Historical accuracy aside, showrunner Chris Van Dusen tells OprahMag.com they wanted Bridgerton to “reflect the world that we live in today.”
To some, this understandably comes off as a far too simplistic way to delve into the very complex idea of race relations in 19th century Britain, particularly when Bridgerton was co-executive produced and written by Van Dusen—a white man. Critics not only address the implications of black and brown people mingling with those who might have been their white oppressors, but also, the exclusion of darker skinned actors from leading roles.

For Regé-Jean Page, how the minds behind Bridgerton would tackle representation in a period drama—let alone Simon being a Black man—was a priority before he agreed to play the Duke of Hastings. For him, episode 4’s monologue from Lady Danbury was an essential detail.
“I like to represent the world we live in, the audience we’re serving, and people who have always lived,” Page tells me. “It’s not like people of color existing is a modern phenomenon. We’ve always been there, we are here, and we’re gonna be there. I think one of the best ways to do that is to have conversations with people because there are unique concerns that affect how we navigate in society.”
As a viewer and romance fanatic, the concept of BIPOCs living freely without issue is difficult to grasp in 2020, particularly as those behind the Black Lives Matter movement are fighting everyday to ensure their community is heard. Bridgerton also raises the very real argument that instead of injecting brown people into a world that didn’t actually accept them, it might be more productive for Hollywood to peruse and adapt from the plethora of acclaimed romance novels that are already inclusive. Novelists Beverly Jenkins, Alyssa Cole, and more are a great place to start.
Is one warm, fluffy conversation between a man and his wise godmother really enough to explain multiracial casting in a series set in a country with a painful history? For some, perhaps not. But while I agree with much of the dissent, it was still a welcome breath of fresh air to not be faced with exhaustive on-screen dialogue about why my people deserve to be seen on a hit TV series. We’ve already spent decades saying as much. Bridgerton just reinforces it.

C.M. Superficially viewed, you are right. But they fought against some principles which JdN clearly has shown that would have protected their descendants from the mess they are in now.
