AfD party leader Tino Chrupalla has called on the federal government to recognize Russia as the victor in the Ukraine war. Russia won this war, he told the newspaper Die Welt. “Reality has caught up with those who claim to want to enable Ukraine [with more arms and money] to win the war,” he continued. The German federal government must “finally get to the point of wanting to end the war.” Chrupalla also questioned the usefulness of Germany’s membership in NATO. “So far, Europe has been forced to implement America’s interests, and we reject that,” he said. A defense community must “accept and respect the interests of all European countries – including also Russia’s vital interests,” he continued. “If NATO cannot ensure this, Germany must consider to what extent this alliance is still useful for us,” said Chrupalla.
Chrupalla goes beyond the AfD election manifesto
The draft of the AfD election platform, which is to be adopted at the party conference on January 11 and 12, 2025 in Riesa, Saxony, states: “Until an independent and effective European military alliance is established, membership in NATO and an active role for Germany in the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) remain central elements of our security strategy.”
However, more recently, in a draft of its election manifesto from the end of November, the AfD also called for, among other things, withdrawal from the EU, the euro and the Paris Climate Agreement. The draft also provides for restrictions on the right to abortion, an end to economic sanctions against Russia and the repair and restarting of the Nord Stream pipeline. And about a week ago, the AfD federal executive board officially nominated Alice Weidel as the AfD’s candidate for chancellor of Germany.
