Of course, in evaluating this beautiful white girl, one must remember that, out on the frontier, a lot of the white men she had known before her capture were louts and drunks. And the Indian, by contrast, had treated her like a princess.
I read a book about the Deerfield Massacre, in old colonial Massachusetts, and after peace was re-established, several captured white women categorically refused to go back to white society (which in that case was Puritan, and the opposite of Dodge, being excessively pious).
