Communities set up local currencies and exchange networks in attempt to beat the economic crisis

It’s been a busy day at the market in downtown Volos. Angeliki Ioanitou has sold a decent quantity of olive oil and soap, while her friend Maria has done good business with her fresh pies.

But not a single euro has changed hands – none of the customers on this drizzly Saturday morning has bothered carrying money at all. For many, browsing through the racks of second-hand clothes, electrical appliances and home-made jams, the need to survive means money has been usurped.

“It’s all about exchange and solidarity, helping one another out in these very hard times,” enthused Ioanitou, her hair tucked under a floppy felt cap. “You could say a lot of us have dreams of a utopia without the euro.”

…in the heart of Greece‘s most fertile plain, locals have come up with a novel way of dealing with austerity – adopting their own alternative currency, known as the Tem. As the country struggles with its worst crisis in modern times, with Greeks losing up to 40% of their disposable income as a result of policies imposed in exchange for international aid [JdN: =  more New York Jew Shylockian money-lending 😉] the system has been a huge success. Organisers say some 1,300 people have signed up to the informal bartering network.

For users such as Ioanitou, the currency – a form of community banking monitored exclusively online – is not only an effective antidote to wage cuts and soaring taxes but the “best kind of shopping therapy”. “One Tem is the equivalent of one euro [JdN: about one US dollar]. My oil and soap came to 70 Tem and with that I bought oranges, pies, napkins, cleaning products and Christmas decorations,” said the mother-of-five. “I’ve got 30 Tem left over. For women, who are worst affected by unemployment, and don’t have kafeneia [coffeehouses] to go to like men, it’s like belonging to a hugely supportive association.”

Greece’s deepening economic crisis has brought new users. With ever more families plunging into poverty and despair, shops, cafes, factories and businesses have also resorted to the system under which goods and services – everything from yoga sessions to healthcare, babysitting to computer support – are traded in lieu of credits.

“For many it plays a double role of supplementing lost income and creating a protective web at this particularly difficult moment in their lives,” says Yiannis Grigoriou, a UK-educated sociologist among the network’s founders. “The older generation in this country can still remember when bartering was commonplace. In villages you’d exchange milk and goat’s cheese for meat and flour.”

Other grassroots initiatives have appeared across Greece. Increasingly bereft of social support, or a welfare state able to meet the needs of a growing number of destitute and hungry, locals have set up similar trading networks in the suburbs of Athens, the island of Corfu, the town of Patras and northern Katerini.

But Volos, the first to be established, is by far the biggest. Until recently the city, 200 miles north of Athens, was a thriving industrial hub with a port whose ferries not only connected the mainland to nearby islands but before Syria’s descent into civil war was a trading route between Greece and the Middle East. Once famous for its tobacco, Volos was home to flour mills and cement factories, steel and metal works.

But, today, it is joblessness that it has come to be known for in a country whose unemployment rate recently hit a European record of 26%, surpassing even that of Spain.

“Frankly the Tem has been a life-saver,” said Christina Koutsieri, clutching DVDs and a bag of food as she emerged from the marketplace. “In March I had to close the grocery store I had kept going for 27 years because I just couldn’t afford all the new taxes and bills. Everyone I know has lost their jobs. It’s tragic.”

Last year, the Greek government stepped in with a law that supported finding creative ways to cope with the crisis. For the first time, alternative forms of entrepreneurship and local development were actively encouraged.

Although locals insist the Tem, which is also available in voucher form, will never replace banknotes – and has not been dreamed up to dodge taxes – they say it is a viable alternative.

For local officials such as Panos Skotiniotis, the mayor of Volos, the alternative currency has proved to be an excellent way of supplementing the euro. “We are all for supporting alternatives that help alleviate the crisis’s economic and social consequences,” he said. “It won’t ever replace the euro but it is really helping weaker members of our society. In all the social and cultural activities of the municipality, we are encouraging the Tem to be used.”

==============THE AMBER ROOM AND HEAVEN

JdN: Nota bene: The Jew Olly Steeds lies in this episode (as in his earlier attack on me) when he says the Germans stole the Amber Room, implying heavily the Russians had created it.

In reality, the Germans (actually, the Prussians, who were the Spartans of Germany…) built it around 1712 (designed by the great Andreas Schlüter ), and gave it as a gift to the Russian tsar in return for some six-foot-tall Russians (to be used by the Prussian “Soldier King” as his special bodyguard troops).

But since the jewish bolsheviks wiped out the tsar dynasty, and a gift to a tsar was certainly not a gift to Trotsky and Lenin, in 1942 the Germans took it back!

Amber surrounds the painting “To Hear”.  The Amber Room was taken to Königsberg, East Prussia in 1942 and disappeared in 1945….possibly destroyed by looting, arsoning Soviet soldiers. These photos are of an exact reconstruction of the Amber Room, paid for by a German natural-gas company, in 2003 and erected in the Catherine Palace in St. Petersburg, Russia.

These days, there are few, few things to admire about the socialist, bankrupt and culturally degenerating USA, but at least so far, one thing remains: the right to bear arms and use deadly force to defend one’s self and possessions.

This will probably come as a total shock to most of my Western readers, but at one point, Russia was one of the most heavily armed societies on earth. This was, of course, when we were free under the Tsar. Weapons, from swords and spears to pistols, rifles and shotguns were everywhere, common items. People carried them concealed, they carried them holstered. Fighting knives were a prominent part of many traditional attires and those little tubes on the costumes of Cossacks and various Caucasian peoples? Well those are bullet holders for rifles.

JdN: The Cossacks are a warlike part of the Russian people who once were a border clan who fought Mongols and Turks for the tsar. What the “little tubes” on belts are properly called is bandoleers. It is pitiful that —  there has been no draft since the 1970s — most young white men in America have no military or firearms experience. I am especially shocked how many WN activists own no weapons. They are ASKING psychopaths like Holder to arrest them! Remember Shaun Walker, who got seven years for a barfight with no injuries, and lawyer Edgar Steele, railroaded into prison for fifty years on the word of a convicted felon, a lowlife whom he had treated with kindness, given a chance, and made into his handyman! IF YOU HAVE NO GUNS AND WILLINGNESS TO USE THEM AND FIGHT TO THE DEATH, YOU ARE ASKING TO BE ARRESTED.

Various armies, such as the Poles, during the Смута (Times of Troubles), or Napoleon, or the Germans even as the Tsarist state collapsed under the weight of WW One and Wall Street moneys, found that holding Russian lands was much much harder than taking them and taking was no easy walk in the park but a blood bath all its own. In holding, one faced an extremely well armed and aggressive population hell-bent on exterminating or driving out the aggressor.

This well-armed population was what allowed the various White factions [JdN: the communists were the “reds,” and the anti-communists were called the “Whites”]  to rise up, no matter how disorganized politically and militarily they were in 1918 and wage a savage civil war against the Reds. It should be noted that many of these armies were armed peasants, villagers, farmers and merchants, protecting their own. If it had not been for Washington’s clandestine support of and for the Reds, history would have gone quite differently.

Moscow fell, for example, not from a lack of weapons to defend it, but from the lying guile of the Reds. Ten thousand Reds took Moscow and were opposed only by some few hundreds of officer cadets and their instructors. Even then the battle was fierce and losses high. However, in the city alone, at that time, lived over 30,000 military officers (both active and retired), all with their own issued weapons and ammunition, plus tens of thousands of other citizens who were armed. The Soviets promised to leave them all alone if they did not intervene. They did not and for that were asked afterwards to come register themselves and their weapons: where they were promptly shot.

Of course being savages, murderers and liars does not mean being stupid and the Reds learned from their Civil War experience. One of the first things they did was to disarm the population.

From that point, mass repression, mass arrests, mass deportations, mass murder, mass starvation were all a safe game for the powers that were. The worst they had to fear was a pitchfork in the guts or a knife in the back or the occasional hunting rifle. Not much for soldiers.

To this day, with the Soviet Union now dead 21 years, with a whole generation born and raised to adulthood without the SU, we are still denied our basic and traditional right to self defense. Why? We are told that everyone would just start shooting each other and crime would be everywhere….but criminals are still armed and still murdering and too often, especially in the far regions [JdN: far from Moscow], those criminals wear the uniforms of the police. The fact that everyone would start shooting is also laughable when statistics are examined.

While President Putin pushes through reforms, the local authorities, especially in our vast hinterland, do not feel they need to act like they work for the people. They do as they please, a tyrannical class who knows they have absolutely nothing to fear from a relatively unarmed population. This in turn breeds not respect but absolute contempt and often enough, criminal abuse.

For those of us fighting for our traditional rights, the US Second Amendment is a rare light in an ever darkening room.

[JdN: The key thing to understand below is that a militia is a people’s army, set up by citizens, not the government’s army. On May 8, 1792, Congress passed “An act more effectually to provide for the National Defence, by establishing an Uniform Militia throughout the United States” requiring: “Each and every free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years (except as is herein after excepted) shall severally and respectively be enrolled in the militia…]

Governments will use the excuse of trying to protect the people from maniacs and crime, but are in reality, it is the bureaucrats protecting their power and position.

In all cases where guns are banned, gun crime continues and often increases. As for maniacs, be it nuts with cars (NYC, Chapel Hill NC), swords (Japan), knives (China) or home made bombs (everywhere), insane people strike. They throw acid (Pakistan, UK), they throw fire bombs (France), they attack. What is worse is that the best way to stop a maniac is not psychology or jail or “talking to them”, it is a bullet in the head. That is why they are a maniac, because they are incapable of living in reality or stopping themselves.

The excuse that people will start shooting each other is also plain and silly. So it is our politicians saying that our society is full of incapable adolescents who can never be trusted? Then, please explain how we can trust them or the police, who themselves grew up and came from the same culture?

No it is about power and a total power over the people. There is a lot of desire to badmouth the Tsar, particularly by the Communists, who claim he was a tyrant, and yet under him we were armed and under the liberals disarmed. Do not be fooled by a belief that “progressives” and leftists hate guns. Oh, no, they do not. What they hate is guns in the hands of those who are not marching in lock-step of their ideology. They hate guns in the hands of those who think for themselves and do not obey without question. They hate guns born by those whom they have slated for a gun barrel to the back of their ear.

So, do not fall for the false promises and do not extinguish the light that is left to allow humanity a measure of self respect.

People loved the last blog on the Spartans and I was especially gratified to get kudos by email from the heroic Paul Fromm of Canada and the beloved writer and speaker Raymond Goodwin of Texas….

But no blog will turn things around. I know that. It will take something very dramatic.

As for the white victims in that video abnove, I hate to say it but they all look pathetic. I also hate to say it but — “serves ’em right.” They are the kinds of patriotic zombies who applauded Bush when he passed the USA PATRIOT Act and invaded Iraq, and who would dismiss you and me in a heartbeat if we brought up the Jews as being behind Obama and Holder, AND ESPECIALLY BEHIND GUN CONTROL.

They needed these raids to wake them up, because they are and even look like humanimals. If you watch that video again, all you can see is the bewilderment of the truly pathetic.

We need a movement that states the obvious fact that most people TODAY are morally and intellectually pathetic. We never will win over most of these zombies. Democracy is dead because, as the Founding Fathers realized during the Revolution, most people then — and even more now — are pathetic, stupid cowards and utterly unworthy of the honorable name of AMERICAN. We need to openly bury the anti-Constitutional and crazy notion, which Washington and Jefferson themselves rejected, of so-called “democracy” — because the Founding Fathers created a republic, where the best citizens only should have the vote.

Do I CARE about these people in the video above? Yes, most definitely. They are our kin. Do I want to submit to their pathetic, naive, uninformed judgments on matters of state? No. How long has the Internet been waking people up — and yet certain ones still are “shocked” Still watching FOX NEWS CHANNEL AND SWALLOWING EVERY LYING WORD about this country still being “free”? We have been in a police state since September 11, 2001!

The whole Lowlife affair in December, when the kid I helped for five months embezzled four thousand donated dollars from me (and from in effect my donors as well), and the zombie looks of hatred I am now getting from a certain woeful minority here in Apollo, and the refusal of the cops to arrest Lowlife, have hardened me immensely.

I lived near here in 1994-1996. At the beginning of the Revolutionary War, on April 19, 1775, a company of minutemen from Acton responded to the call to arms initiated by Paul Revere and fought at the North Bridge in Concord as part of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. The Acton minutemen were led by Captain Isaac Davis. When a company was needed to lead the advance on the bridge which was defended by the British regulars, Captain Davis was heard to reply, “I haven’t a man who is afraid to go.” The Acton men led because, unlike other militias there, they were fully equipped with bayonets. The colonists advanced on the bridge; in the exchange of musket fire that followed, Captain Isaac Davis and Private Abner Hosmer of Acton were killed. Davis was the first officer to die in the American Revolutionary War. Here is a fairly realistic painting of the action at Concord Bridge. (I was a historical tour guide in Massachusetts in the 1990s.) When the Americans charged, the British Army troops, poorly led that day (by a Royal Marines captain whom they barely knew) retreated — in a rout that lasted all the way back to Boston.
