This being PC-America, the real solution is not discussed — no negroes in white areas!
As it turns out, the “hammer” was probably a wrench or some other light tool. A real hammer would have done some serious damage. The Amerindians used a kind of war hammer, which would either kill you nor knock you out for capture and torture, which the French called a casse-tête, a “head-breaker.”
Tragically, one white Massachusetts girl was hit by an Indian with one of these
, never recovered, acted dazed and zombie-like, and died — after a year of splitting headaches.
