— Private rescue NGOs at sea actually facilitate the work of smuggling gangs

Private sea rescue NGOs walk a fine line between humanity and criminal activity. Once celebrated for their work, there is now increasing evidence that they are actually facilitating the work of the smugglers, even cooperating with them.

There was a time when Italian media celebrated state and private sea rescuers as “heroes” and “angels of the seas”. This positive mood changed in 2017. They began to denounce rescue ships like “Sea-Watch” or “Alan Kurdi” as “taxis of the sea” and “co-tugs”. One consequence of this change in climate: Public prosecutors began to prosecute private sea rescuers this year.

In private sea-born rescue, the line between humanitarian aid and aid to illegal migration is narrow. In individual cases, excessive moral zeal can easily lead to violating laws “in the service of humanity.” The weight of the evidence that the police and the public prosecutor’s office have collected against a total of seven NGOs and made public, as well as the findings from Frontex that they have gained from follow-up interviews with refugees, speak in favor of it being a crime.
