Of all the N.A.T.O nations Turkey represents the biggest strategic threat to Russia’s territorial integrity due its geographical proximity to the Caucasus region, i.e. Russia’s soft underbelly, where the Georgians, out of spite for the Russo-Georgian War of 2008, could grant the Turks a vengeful free passage through their territory into Russia’s majority Sunni Muslim Circassia region. The Turks would then be seen by many Circassians, especially their diaspora, as liberators, whereupon the other Sunni Muslim Caucasus populations might rise up against Russian rule. If the Turks were to break through the Caucasus they could then attack the Donbass from the east and simultaneously send armies north-east to the oil rich region of Russian Tatarstan, where they would receive a very warm welcome from the ethnic Volga Tatars, them all being fellow Turkic speaking Sunni Muslims. Much chai and kebab would then be consumed and many bellydancers’ wobbly bits would wobble in celebration! If the Iranians were to amass sufficient forces in their north-west frontier they and the Armenians might be strong enough to temporarily block Turkish intrusion into the Caucasus but I suspect the Iranians will be preoccupied with their Persian Gulf front. The pro-Assad Syrians with their Syria based Russian allies could simultaneously attack across the Turko-Syrian border into southern Turkey to divert Turkish forces away from the Caucasus. Within southern Turkey itself the Kurds could be incited to rise in rebellion against Turk rule, thereby pinning down more Turks. Turkey could then persuade their Turkic cousins in Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan to attack all along Iran’s northern frontier. I understand that those aforementioned Turkic nations are associated with Russia’s “Commonwealth of Independant States” (C.I.S), and are therefore still under the Russian sphere of influence but, “blood is thicker than water” as the saying goes, so I strongly suspect they would likely ally with Turkey against Russia in the event of war, and if victorious would form a Turanian commonwealth, with Turkey at the helm.
