The Russian Defense Ministry has released video footage of the delivery of S-300 systems, interceptor missiles, radars and other hardware to Syria to boost the country’s air-defense capabilities in the wake of the Il-20 incident.
The night-time footage shows the military hardware being unloaded off the world’s largest military transport jet, the Antonov An-124 Ruslan (the Condor), designed to carry a payload of 120 tons.
The video shows the gigantic front cargo doors of the aircraft opening up, through which the Russian servicemen rapidly unload an S-300 launcher, radar and control vehicles, as well as the mounting of surface-to-air interceptor missile tubes onto a hauling unit.
According to Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, a total of 49 pieces of military equipment were supplied to Damascus and all of it will be integrated with the Russian anti-air capabilities into a unified air defense control system by October 20, while Syrian crews will be trained to operate the new hardware within three months.

The Russian military has accused Israeli counterparts of acting recklessly and unprofessionally, and of deliberately using the defenseless plane as a cover, while Tel Aviv attempted to shift all the blame for the incident on Damascus and Tehran.

The news of Russia completing the delivery of its S-300 air defense system to the Syrian Army has provoked a nervous reaction in Washington, as the US State Department said it still hopes that the delivery had not taken place.
“I saw that report. I cannot confirm that it is accurate. I hope that they did not,” the State Department’s spokeswoman, Heather Nauert, said, referring to the Russian military, as she responded to a question about the S-300.
“That would be a sort of a serious escalation” of the situation on the ground in Syria, she added, while refusing to comment further on the issue. Earlier on Tuesday, the Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that the Russian military have completed the delivery.
The hardware supplied to Syria consisted of 49 pieces of military equipment, including radars, control vehicles and four S-300 launchers, he added. A unified air defense control system will be created in Syria by October 20, while training of the Syrian crews will take three months, according to Shoigu. The new air defense systems will be particularly able to suppress satellite navigation, radars and communications systems of enemy aircraft over the Mediterranean Sea, in what might be a source of particular concern for the US and its allies.
Russia’s move follows the downing of the Il-20 reconnaissance plane over Syria. It was shot down by a Syrian air defense system while the Israeli jets used it as a cover during an air raid striking targets in the Latakia province. Tel Aviv denied responsibility for the tragedy while the Russian Defense Ministry presented a detailed report on the incident and radar data showing that an Israeli jet indeed used the Russian plane as a cover.

The IAF must increasingly rely on the futuristic stealth capabilities of the troubled F-35 jet if it’s to continue its raids with impunity, after Syria’s air-defenses were boosted with S-300 systems, Israeli army radio reports.
Tel Aviv’s self-reserved right to freely strike ‘Iranian targets’ anywhere inside or outside Syria was severely undermined by Moscow’s transfer of S-300 air defense systems and accompanying hardware to Damascus.
The surface-to-air interceptors delivered to the Syrian Arab Army, as well as Moscow’s resolve to jam the radar, navigation, and communications systems on any aircraft attacking targets in Syria via the Mediterranean coast might complicate missions for Israeli F-15s and F-16s. So, to avert potential threats to their fighter planes, Israel will rely more on the F-35 to carry out its missions in Syria, Galei Tzahal (Army Radio) reported.
“The coming attacks won’t be the first, but they will be safer for the pilots in light of the new reality in Syria’s skies,” a source within IAF told the radio station, also emphasizing that Israel has every intention to use this “most expensive weapon in the world.”
In recent years, Tel Aviv purchased 50 F-35 units, known in Israel by their Hebrew name, the ‘Adir,’ from Lockheed Martin, at the cost of $125 million each. Eight of the planes have already been transferred to Israel, while 33 more are expected to arrive by 2021, an IAF source said.

Moscow pinned the blame for the death of the 15 servicemen on Tel Aviv, asserting that the tragedy occurred because four Israeli F-16 jets used the Russian plane as a cover during an air raid in the Latakia province.

Officials overseeing the development of the F-35 fighter jets have apparently deliberately downplayed some critical deficiencies that can endanger lives of both pilots and troops on the ground, said the Project On Government Oversight (POGO), an independent watchdog. It obtained the Pentagon agency’s documents which show that there’s no justification or plans to fix the flaws still plaguing the $1.5 trillion program.
Instead of fixing them, the problems were just re-categorized. The Deficiency Review Board of the Joint Strike Fighter Program Office downgraded 19 Category I problems to a less serious Category II, without providing any plan to correct ten of those critical design flaws.
Category I deficiencies “may cause death, severe injury, or severe occupational illness; may cause loss or major damage to a weapon system; critically restricts the combat readiness capabilities of the using organization; or result in a production line stoppage,” according to the US military documents.
Category II deficiencies “could impede or constrain successful mission accomplishment.” The categories are assigned to the deficiencies by the testing personnel, who identify them during the test and evaluation process.
In many cases, however, the board acted on its own “with no apparent justification or evidence that the flaws were in fact not as serious as initially categorized,” POGO said.
The list of the most critical issues includes problems with an emergency alert system when pilots eject, damage to the plane caused by the tail hook on the Navy variant, or the lack of any means for a pilot to confirm a weapon’s target data before firing, which could lead to troops on the ground being hit by friendly fire.
The Pentagon’s attempts to paper over serious problems with the F-35 are apparently caused by its desire to avoid further delays in the aircraft development schedule, POGO said. The F-35, built by Lockheed Martin, was supposed to finish the 16-year development phase this year.
“They want to be able to go up to Capitol Hill and say, ‘Nope, we don’t have any more Category 1 deficiencies,’” Dan Grazier, a military fellow at POGO, told Washington Examiner, adding that the developers are “just three weeks away from” a major deadline for initial test and evaluation of the aircraft, which comes on September 15.
In June, the US congressional watchdog, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) also warned the Pentagon against moving to mass production of the planes until all technical issues are resolved.
The same report also found almost 1,000 various technical problems affecting the F-35 jets, including 111 designated as Category 1 flaws. The issues ranged from helmets that can hinder pilots’ vision to a stealth-coating that might “melt” during a flight at supersonic speed.
The fifth-generation stealth fighter built by Lockheed Martin was supposed to be a modular design, with modifications adapting it for service in the US Air Force (F-35A), the US Marine Corps (F-35B) and the US Navy (F-35C). However, the aircraft development repeatedly missed the deadlines and the cost of each individual fighter jet is now estimated to surpass $120 million.
The notorious jets have also repeatedly faced various technical issues while flying. Most recently, an F-35 plane had to perform an emergency landing after experiencing a technical malfunction over Floridian skies. When it already parked, the jet’s front nose gear collapsed, adding to the misery. In December 2017, a US Air Force F-35 fighter jet lost a panel during a “routine training mission” in Okinawa.
How do you know if there are any missiles in those launch tubes? I say they’re empty. It seems suspicious to me that Russia would make a video of the S-300s being unloaded, as if they anticipated that no one would believe it, and they needed to “prove” that it was really happening: “See – we’re really not messing around this time, guys!” Yeah, right.
And even if there are missiles in those S-300 tubes, the article below states that Israel is not going to stop bombing Syria, and will work with Russia to avoid future incidents like the Il-20 shoot-down. So, nothing changes, and Israel is free to continue bombing Syria, with Russia’s tacit approval, just as I said in my earlier comment.
