“Regret” — a statue outside the Louvre Museum in Paris

You may experience regret today. It arises from time to time in most lives. Regret over things you will likely never do, things you did poorly in the past (and the consequences thereof), regret over opportunities missed — and moments lost.

Your life is like an infinitely branching road…..

…and in each moment, you are called upon to choose from thousands of possibilities, thousands of possible turn-offs.

Think of all the moments, all the choices, all the possibilities eschewed. Often, you are confident of the direction you take and don’t look back. But frequently enough, you do the best you can — and you live with the results. Sometimes you know without doubt that you made the wrong turn.

The weight of all those roads not taken could be hovering today over you. And this could feel deeply sad and extremely heavy.

But here is our thought: those choices are done. And today, if you are feeling regret, and even if you are not, you do have many more choices to make. Beginning with how you handle your sadness.

We want to suggest that if you find it, approach it and yourself with the greatest compassion you can unearth in your heart.

You have done the very best you could in each moment.

You may look back and wonder how certain choices could possibly represent your best, but really, how could they have been otherwise?

So start by feeling your regret, whenever it assails you, and then move into compassion for your own pain.

It is unbearably difficult at times to find your way through the fog of life in a body, and you must understand that no matter how many times you have turned off your path, it was really just a necessary leg of the journey.

There is nothing to change but the present moment, so keep some significant part of yourself here, in the now. So that you can respond to the challenge of regret and loss to the very best of your ability.

Our overall advice today is for you to be gentle, kind and tender with yourself first, and anyone else you encounter second.

Try to stay conscious of the fact that each and every one of you is working with all you have right now.

There really are no slackers, appearances notwithstanding.

And if you feel any sadness or regret, try to keep it from clouding your heart or mind, as it is wont to do. Look it straight in the eye, see it for what it is and keep on loving.

Meet the forks in the road with love and the longing for more light, and you will make your way through the day well. In fact, when one meets difficult energies with love and light, be they external or internal, there is great cause for celebration.

This is your opportunity today. Run with it!

We love you. — E. West
