In the true NDE story “Miracles from Heaven,” from 2016 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracles_from_Heaven_(film)) a little girl (played by the highly gifted child actress Kylie Rogers) is dying in agony from an intestinal disease, a motility disorder, where the food, having gone through the stomach, does not move as it should through the intestines, but blocks them up, causing great pain, and the patient also gets no nutrition.

The actress Kylie Rogers, who is from Dallas, Texas, btw, is now on the hit tv neo-Western series  “Yellowstone” (with Kevin Costner) on the Paramount Network.

Kylie was also the co-star with Russell Crowe in a poignant movie, “Fathers and Daughters,”  about a little girl coming to grips with the fact that her novelist father (Crowe), whom she loves, will always be an irresponsible drunk. But she must not judge all men by him as she enters young womanhood and starts meeting men.

I repeat: this “Miracles from Heaven” is a true story.

I spent almost four hours verifying it with various news articles, and on the doctor’s website. 

This is the actual Beam family from the Dallas, Texas region.

I also was familiar with Children’s Hospital in Boston, which is affiliated with Harvard University Medical School.

It is located in the “Longwood Medical Center,” in Boston, where the staff is directed by Harvard doctors, and patients are seen but also important edical research is undertaken.

For years in the 1990s I tutored in the American accent to Japanese cancer researchers who were working there. (Fun fact,  though not fun for the Japanese — one third of the sounds in English do not exist at all in the Japanese language, nor do the Japanese stress any syllables in a word.)

I learned many astounding things from these Japanese doctors, such as that they have bred a kind of fish to do cancer treatments on, and the fish has a body that is as clear as glass, and this is so they can see into the fish and if it has any tumors growing on it, or shrinking due to some treatment, and without having to kill it and open it up, yes, a fish with a clear body!

I actually got a very positive impression of the Japanese people: very disciplined, punctual, honest, considerate and polite.

As for the movie, the producer only added two important characters to “Miracles from Heaven”:

1) a jewish reporter who was an atheist and believed there is nothing afterward when you die, and he objects to his dying daughter being told by Annabel Beam, with whom his daughter shares a hospital room, that there is an afterlife and a  God who loves us. This jew, like half of all jews, as a Wikipedia article states, does not believe in God or any afterlife.

2) They also changed one very likable white woman in Boston, who showed the worried mother and her very< sick daughter around town, to being a black woman (as played by the actress Queen Latifa). But this was doubtless to increase the black audience, since the real story was 99% about white people, with maybe three Hispanics: the doctor himself, a tv reporter, and a kind check-in clerk at the Dallas airport.

This offers a touching scene of humanity as the father has maxxed out all his credit cards, flying back and forth repeatedly with his wife and two other kids from Dallas to Boston. This is a short but powerful scene.

Sometimes complete strangers can be so compassionate when it is about families and a sick loved one. I remember once going a bit over the speed limit here in Michigan, and a state trooper pulled me over. Of course, I am always respectful and had my driver’s license, registration and insurance ready. But he looked into the passenger compartment and saw my wife, Margi, with her head in a scarf, all her hair being gone from the cancer treatments.

This was she and I at the Mayo Clinic.

The trooper just let us off with a warning.  🙂 That showed, as with the airline check-in clerk in the movie, that most people do have a kind heart in there somewhere.

Btw, this is not a Jesus movie. Several obnoxious characters are churchgoers; the doctor (Dr. Nurko) is jewish, a Mexican jew — an accurate detail —

and the mother herself stops believing in God  –“Are you there? Are you real? Are you listening to me?” 

…or one could say she has a crisis of faith as her daughter –a well-behaved and sweet kid —  is suffering and dying.

In fact, the family’s minister himself admits in refreshing honesty that he has no really good explanation for why a loving God would let their daughter go through such agonies, and also the huge expenses which are bankrupting the parents.

So this film, “Miracles from Heaven,” is not a sugary movie.

It has many light, very touching, and even funny moments, but the basic story is grim, a dying child in great pain who then suffers an additional tragedy to further scar this family. It does have a very happy ending, but there actually was such a wonderful turn-around in real life.

Yes, Annabel Beam DOES die, and she goes to a beautiful interlife.

Three-quarters of us go to this temporary heaven, and are often transformed in positive ways by the experience. Some see a video of their life, see how they helped or hurt others, and realize there are changes they can make to be more loving and responsible. I emphasize that all the good effects which we have had on others is something this life-review video also shows us. 🙂

And 75% of us do go at death temporarily to this welcoming and beautiful place, and are not put down or trashed for our flaws. We get no lecture; our self-esteem is not destroyed. We simply see the key scenes in our life that show clearly how we acted and we realize through this video how we affected the lives and feelings of other people.

Spoiler alert:  Annabel is finally sent home basically to die (and, let me reiterate that the family has suffered a gigantic financial loss from flying back and forth from Texas to Boston, and using hotels in Boston, etc.).

And THEN Annabel falls out of a tree, from thirty feet up, right onto her head, and is lodged inside the hollow trunk of a dead tree.

This is the photo of said tree which has since totally collapsed, with the daughter and mother.

She lies there motionless, making no sound, for hours as the EMTs tried to get into the dead tree to her witht the tres collapsing onto the child. The EMTS and firemen finally get her out of the bottom of the tree, and a Medivac helicopter takes her to a hospital.

The upshot is that Annabel Beam wakes up in the ER — and she is not only not dead, nor is she paralyzed after falling 30 feet onto her head, but she is now, as x-ray and other tests show, in total remission from her fatal disease!

This means that every trace of her intestinal motility disease, which no treatment at Harvard had been able to fix, is completely gone.

This kind of medical miracle does happen, and is called “spontaneous remission,” but it is extremely rare, obviously. Every  year, millions of Americans die from their diseases.

The mother meets in Boston with the doctor for the last time and asks him how Annabel could possibly have gone into  total remission. Dr. Nurko offers, hesitatingly, that “maybe when Annabel fell on her head, that reset her nervous system.”  Well, I note that he did not write a scientific paper on how we should drop dying patients thirty feet onto their head! 😉

To point out again how this is not a sugary movie, and people remain skeptical and pessimistic, the parents (and remember, the father is a trained surgeon himself) could not entirely believe this double miracle had happened — and they kept giving their daughter her meds for this motility disorder, though she was in remission.

But soon Annabel’s swollen abdomen completely went away.

She got all her old energy back, and the horrible pain has also vanished.

But (and this is a classic NDE case, with NDE meaning “Near-Death Experience”) she entered a kind of heaven and “a man” told her lovingly that she could not stay in heaven but must go back to earth to achieve certain goals.

Annabel objected, and did so without fear of this mysterious “man,” saying “I do not want to go back to that terrible pain.” The man announces that her body is totally cured, her pain is finished, and she will go back to her family healthy.

This video below comprises the first ten minutes of the film. And you can see (accurately) that the Beams (who are a real Texas family) are no trailer-park family that needs to cook up a story to pay the bills. The wife, Christy Beam, is a successful writer;

….and the husband, Kevin Beam, a successful veterinary surgeon.

They live in a very nice house; they are happy, successful, church-going people, taking their Christianity very seriously,  and the whole family is functioning fairly well in their relationships.

In fact, they pretty-much had it made — until the day that a disease suddenly struck one of them, affecting the whole family.

(How well I know this myself from caring for my late wife for 4 1/3 years, which took over my life and ended up with me giving Margi around-the-clock care in her final two months.)

I will never tire of recommending this movie about a real event. This girl was sent home to die and THEN she had a fatal accident on top of it! So it was TWO miracles, miracles PLURAL, from heaven, hence the title of the movie.

Yes, the next-of-kin will miss their loved ones, just as I miss my late wife Margi every single day.

But in time that grief does heal somewhat; you learn to live with it. I have not had any tears over it for six months, for which I am glad, because it was destroying me.

It is the survivors who received permanently crippling injuries who are the ones I feel most sorry for….They may have severe PTSD… and feel like a useless burden on others… and think about being unable to do the things they used to do before — the fun they used to have when their body was whole…..

And what reincarnation means is that we have lived and died, and lived again for HUNDREDS OF TIMES. And vast growth can happen in the interlife, the period between earthly lives.

What is much more horrible is the tragedy of the many who will survive but be crippled and traumatized for life, suffering in every way, and also need endless medical and other care — becoming a burden and a cripple instead of a useful and reasonably happy citizen.

As a former US Marine, and son of a US Marine in WWII and Korea, I can say that nowadays 90% of the wounded do survive, thanks to advanced medical care. BUT many of the very seriously wounded commit suicide after a few years!.... sometimes after $300,000 in surgeries at taxpayer expense.

What does a young man do with himself without legs, stuck in a wheelchair, and with persistent pain? (One of Margi’s friends, who stayed with us twice, an older lady, had severe, chronic pain and — just as she had informed us — chose to end her life in 2021. I could not come up with a good argument why she should not do this after years of pain. )

I profoundly admire this Marine’s positive spirit; but does he have a girlfriend? Will he ever have one?
