Dear Mr. Leininger:

I want to thank you so much for writing your courageous book about your son James and your own honest search for the truth. I am sure there was a lot of hubbub a decade ago when this boldly pro-reincarnation book came out, but I imagine that the controversy has since died down quite a bit.

But I think you and your beautiful wife Andrea, by stepping forward bravely with your experience, have really made a huge difference.

Yes, the needle has really moved. With the masses, reincarnation has gone from being some weird, nutty, Eastern, pagan, or even evil teaching to now being a real possibility. About half of all Americans now think “palingenesis” (another word for reincarnation) is possible.
.
It occurred to me, looking over the whole affair, that maybe an angel or even arch-angel somehow was using you and all your family for a higher purpose. I say this because you three were simply the perfect American family — coming across as anything but “flaky” people — in  order to expand our minds.
.
With your square, Midwestern, German jaw and manly demeanor, you come across as a solid, conscientious, caring dad, and anything but an “odd duck” or hippie.

Your book shows that you resisted for years the reincarnation hypothesis, as many down-to-earth people would, and especially traditional Christians.

(If I may say so), you also have a very attractive (or even adorable) wife in Andrea who comes across as feminine, motherly, and caring, an authentic person who loves her husband and her son, and also wanted to get at the truth about why he was suffering his awful drowning nightmares.

You and Andrea are a successful couple, too (having made it after many struggles, which we all can relate to), and are not “trailer-park” people, so to speak. You and Andrea were not really hurting overly for money, and you did not need to cook up some wild reincarnation story

You have an All-American son, a “real boy”

(who, I read, has now joined the Navy; btw, I was in the Marines, technically part of the Navy,  between 1977-80, just as was my father James a Marine, over in the Pacific 1943-46, in and after WWII.

You get just one guess in what famous battle he fought in WWII! Yes, it was at Iwo Jima…

I think one of the most touching things in your book, Soul Survivor, was when you and little James were raking leaves and he said he had actually selected you two before he was born. An angel had enabled him to see you and your wife Andrea, his future mother, interacting while you two were enjoying dinner together at a Honolulu hotel.

On the right is the “Royal Hawaiian Hotel” (salmon-colored) on Waikiki Beach where the soul (in its interlife) who became James Leininger could see his future parents and chose them.

You had never told little James anything about your romantic get-away vacation to Hawaii, where you two tried yet again, as your book states, to conceive a child,and finally  succeeded, I think with God’s help. (Btw, I have been to Honolulu myself, back in 1972, and even went surfing on Waikiki Beach.)

It must have stunned you that little James somehow knew about this Hawaiian vacation at a time before he was conceived and said to you, with his little rake in hand, “I chose you.”

After reading this, I concluded that the whole thing with you two and James must be part of some greater divine plan to enlighten the American public about reincarnation, and that God’s angels were coaxing this project along. You three are just an All-American family with serious, yet also touching and heart-warming credibility. There is nothing phony about this saga.

But I am sure you had to face the possibility that there would be some ridicule or accusations that you had made it all up, especially down in the Deep-South state of Louisiana. (Btw, I used to live in Metairie, Louisiana. And while nearby N’Awlins may be a wild party town, many others in “Looziana,” as I know, are no-nonsense, by-the-book Christians.)

Anyway, I wish to thank you from the bottom of my heart for having had the sheer guts to share with the world your heterodoxical, yet wonderful, true story.

Btw, I am very interested in reincarnation, and in fact am certain about who I was in my last life, also a WWII soldier.

[LOL – that must be the understatement of the century.  ]

And I too have corresponded with Dr Jim Tucker about it.

As for me, I had a jarring experience at age five, and felt from then on that while I was an American now, I had been of another nationality before. As I encountered classically American things like baseball, football, apple pie, chewing gum, etc., it was all good! But definitely all things Americana, at first, felt kinda strange to me as a kid. 😉
.
I have talked about the Leininger-Huston case with dozens of people, and I always see a little light go on in their eyes.

“Ohhhh yeahhhh, that was that kid who was a WWII pilot. I saw that on TV!”
.
So millions of good people have started to open their minds about reincarnation — and they have done so unquestionably thanks to you, your wife Andrea, and your son James!

…..Dr. Tucker’s report on the Leininger case

After protests from close-minded faculty members, the name of this division of the University of Virginia which does scientific studies of children with past-life memories was changed to “Perceptual Studies.” 😉 I can tell you from experience that some scientists have huge egos and rigidly closed minds. Far from being strictly factual, they are prone to a stubborn, mule-like, and supercilious rejection of anything that might seem  “supernatural.”
