I am a former Marine, as was my father, who fought at Iwo like Donald Mates, a great American. (The only thing I did not like is the slightly glib, smart-ass, superior and subtly disrespectful tone of the interviewer, who obviously never served.)

@Devo The Bot The tone, just slightly condescending, as in “tell me a story, old man,” and, most of all, calling a dignified senior by his first name, “Don.”

.

For me, Devo, he would be “Mr. Mates.” If you did not catch that, well, that is sad.

.

But that is the America of today, where a Bart Simpson calls his own father “Homer.” Would YOU address this warrior as “Don”? I know that down south no American would dare do that.

.

I am a New Englander, but lived for 20 years, and also dated some nice ladies, down South, and kids would always address me as “Mister John.” It’s called RESPECT.

.

If we needed to fight a war like this again, I seriously think with the 17 yr olds we have today we would lose the whole country. Sad.
