Colorized photo of US Civil War head general and future president
Translated from Germany’s prestigious but liberal Der Spiegel [with which I agree, exceptionally, on this one opinion]:
Ulysses S. Grant . I am reading the new biography of Ron Chernow, the best biographer of our time (George Washington, Alexander Hamilton). I’m on page 130, and until then Grant’s life record is dreadful. It is the year 1860, Grant is 38 years old. He has left the US Army, also because of his alcohol problem. He then failed as a farmer, as a rent collector for a real estate company, and now he is working in the leather goods business that belongs to his father. He lives in miserable conditions with his family.
Grant is a broken man, and we would not know anything about him if it had not been for the American Civil War in 1861. Grant became a soldier again and soon became commander-in-chief of the Northern Army. He won the war and was president of the USA from 1869 to 1877. He is one of the major figures of American history. The lesson: Anything is possible.
